Modern Solids, Traditional Inspiration Challenge, and a giveaway!

I've been so busy the past few weeks, wrapping up deadlines and photo shoots for my book, working on some finished quilts to sell, and this fun little project, the Modern Solids, Traditional Inspiration Challenge. A handful of designers and bloggers were asked to participate in this challenge to make a modern quilt, inspired by traditional design, with this gorgeous box of Denyse Schmidt's Modern Solids by FreeSpirit Fabric. You may have seen this collection before which consists of 75 fat quarters of FreeSpirit Designer Solids that Denyse curated and it's the perfect stash builder. It's pretty amazing just to look at too, honestly.

The idea behind this design challenge is Denyse's latest book, Modern Quilts, Traditional Inspiration. It is, hands down, one of my favorite books (I've shared my love of it before), and it beautifully illustrates how Denyse combines her fresh designs with traditional patterns.

I'm busy working on my quilt for the challenge, and I can't wait to share more photos of it with you. Check back here for some photos of the work in progress, and you can find some in my Instagram feed as well. The quilt will be finished by the end of the month when it will be posted on FreeSpirit's blog and audience members will get to vote on their favorite one.  So exciting, right?

But what is even more exciting is that I have a giveaway for you, too! FreeSpirit has generously provided a fat quarter bundle of Denyse's new line, Hadley, for me to share with you.

I must say that I'd really like to keep this myself because it is so gorgeous--seriously, the gold color way is perfection---but of course, I won't do that.

This bundle contains forty fat quarters, including fourteen solids that coordinate beautifully with Denyse's prints.

To enter, please leave a comment below telling me what you'd like to make with the Hadley collection. Be sure to include your email address, so I can notify you if you win. The giveaway ends next week, Thursday, September 18, 2014 at 5 pm ET and I'll choose one random winner. US residents only, please.

And be sure to follow all of the design challenge fun by searching #ModernSolidsChallenge on Instagram and Twitter. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

I've always a fan of the "modern traditionalism" quilts that you make, so I'm excited to see it finished.

As to what I would make with HADLEY, there is a new design that I created on EQ7 which would be prefect for it. Thanks for the opportunity!

The colors suggest autumn to me, and I went to college very near Hadley, MA, so I would design my own quilt inspired by my memories of fall in New England. I love this collection. As a child of the seventies, who grew up in a house with harvest gold, rust, and avocado appliances and decor, the colours in this collection are so comforting and appealing to my sense of nostalgia. I would definitely make a throw for my living room couch, the colours would look great with my existing decor. Thanks so much for sharing this gorgeous bundle of fabrics! YAY!

First - can't wait to see what you create.
Second - i will use this bundle to continue to explore the improv techniques and mindset you taught (channeling Denise) in Sisters this summer. The trick that has most enabled me to let loose is using scissor instead of rotary during piecing - I find it drops all barriers to true improvisation. Thanks so much!

I'm really into mini-quilts right now. Since I've never made a "Lonestar," that is what I would use these fabrics for as the solids especially would be perfect. One of my teachers always said to make more than one of a new technique so you know you have the information stored away in your brain. I could make a second "Lonestar" with the prints, and I bet they'd look totally different.
