{ crafting with fabrics scraps: how to make yo-yos }

Making yo-yos is a great way to use up your pile of fabric scraps. They’re easy to make, don’t require any special tools, and they’re pretty cute, too. Let’s get started!

{ gather your materials }

You’ll need scraps of fabric, a needle, thread, a pair of scissors, a pencil, and something with a circular shape that you can use to trace a circle on your fabric. You can use a coffee cup or a small bowl, but my favorite thing to use is a DVD. I think they make the perfect sized yo-yo.

{ get ready to sew! }

Begin by tracing a circle on the wrong side of your fabric.

Carefully cut out the circle with your scissors. Thread your needle and tie a sturdy knot at the end.

Turn down the edge of the circle about a quarter of an inch, and insert the needle into the fabric.

Sew a running stitch along the perimeter of the fabric, turning down the edge as you go.

When you’ve stitched along the entire circumference of the circle, gently pull the end of the thread to gather the fabric.

Insert your needle into a few of the gathers and tie a secure knot, then snip the thread close to the fabric. Voila! Your yo-yo is done!

{ finished yo-yos are a lot smaller than the circle you started with }

You’ll notice that the finished yo-yo is much smaller than the original circle of fabric that you started with. In fact, a standard sized DVD makes a yo-yo that is approximately 2 ¼ inches in diameter. There is no right or wrong size to make a yo-yo; just keep in mind that there is quite a difference in size when you’re choosing your circular object to trace.

{ cute, cute, cute }

I think fabric yo-yos are so cute. They’ve got a vintage charm, they’re a little kitschy, and a lot of fun. You can use them in all sorts of crafting and sewing projects. Stay tuned, because I’ll be sharing a simple technique to use them to make sweet little hair clips in my next tutorial.

Great job on your first tutorial! I think you did a super job. Just the right number of photos, and nice clear pics too. You are inspiring me to take that first leap into my pattern writing with a tutorial of my own.

I ESPECIALLY love your not so secret Brontealong shout out with the use of Jane Eyre for your CD!

Well done.

I love yo-yo's... I made yo-yo garland for my small country christmas tree... everyone wanted to buy it but I couldn't part with it.. it took a whole lot of yo-yo's! :-)
